Silvretta Ski Resort: Affordable Skiing In Switzerland
Samnaun is a small village located at 1840 meters altitude in the Val Müstair region in the Graubünden canton in Switzerland. This particular ski resort is part of the international Samnaun/Ischgl Silvretta ski resort, which is a border-crossing ski resort shared with Austria.
The après-ski village of Ischgl is situated on the other side of the mountain and because it’s a massive mountain resort, you get to ski over the border to explore the Austrian slopes. Besides, the combined Samnaun and Ischgl ski station has also been named one of the best ski resorts in Austria.
Currently, an adult day skiing pass is priced at €72 and the rates are in Euro because prices are coordinated with Ischgl. Additionally, you can get a 6-day ski pass for a reduced price of €323 per adult in peak season and if you have a guest card, you get further reductions. Guest cards are given to visitors spending the night in one of the tourist accommodations in the village. Yet, you might find more comparable budget-friendly room rates across the border in Austria.
The easiest and fastest way to get there is by car or train. I recommend flying into Innsbruck in Austria, and from there it’s just 1 1/2 hours by car or 3 hours by train. Your second option is to get to Zürich in Switzerland, which has much better flight options, but the travel time to Samnaun can take more than 3 hours by car or train.
Yet, being secluded from the rest of the world has its perks, as the resort is one of the highest in the area. Therefore, snow is assured between November and May and not every ski resort can claim this in 2024.

Saas-Fee: Affordable Skiing In Switzerland
Saas-Fee ski resort is in the south of Switzerland, located near the Matterhorn and close to the Italian border. Saas-Fee offers snow-sure skiing all year due to its glaciers and 3,600 m altitude. There are an impressive 56 ski runs and 40 ski lifts to enjoy at Saas-Fee ski resort.
The closest airport to Saas Fee Ski Resort is Sion airport, approximately 75 km away. However, there are limited flights from international destinations to Sion. Therefore, the best way to access the Saas Valley is by flying to Geneva airport, which is approximately 230 km by car. There are also options to fly to Milan, Zurich, Bern, or Basel airport – from which you can rent a car or take the train.
The cost is CHF 79 for a 1-day adult lift pass at Saas-Fee. To save money, consider purchasing a multi-day ski pass for discounted consecutive days of skiing. However, you should also consider a day skiing at Saas-Grund in the nearby town, where a day lift pass is CHF 59.
You could stay at Hotel Adler in the Saas Valley – a basic but comfortable stay. You need a car to stay at Hotel Adler because it is outside Saas-Fee’s car-free village. From Hotel Adler, you must drive to the multi-storey car park and take the shuttle to the ski lifts. However, you can also book a hotel at the base of the slopes if you do not have a car.
