We love Bratislava and secretly we voted it one of Eastern Europe’s Most Walkable Cities and surprisingly still one of the Best Unknown European Destinations. Bratislava is often overlooked and because of that, it’s not an overrun tourist destination.
Bratislava History
Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, boasts a rich and diverse history that spans centuries. Nestled along the banks of the Danube River, the city has been a crossroads for various cultures and civilizations, leaving an indelible mark on its character.
Once part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Bratislava has witnessed the coronation of Hungarian kings in its iconic St. Martin’s Cathedral. The city’s medieval Old Town, with its charming cobblestone streets and historic buildings, showcases a blend of Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance architecture, reflecting its storied past.
In the 20th century, Bratislava experienced the challenges of political change, transitioning from the Austro-Hungarian Empire to Czechoslovakia and later gaining independence as the capital of Slovakia in 1993.
The scars of communist rule are still visible but the city has emerged as a dynamic European capital, blending its historical roots with a vibrant contemporary energy. Today, Bratislava stands as a testament to resilience, bridging the gap between its rich heritage and the aspirations of its modern, cosmopolitan residents.
How To Get To Bratislava
FLY:

- Click here to fly to Vienna airport. Just 35-45 minutes from Bratislava’s city centre by bus. Flixbus runs every hour from Bratislava’s city centre (link below).
- Alternatively, private transfers are available from Vienna’s airport to Bratislava’s city centre.
BUS & TRAIN:

- Bratislava Hlavna Stanica is the main train station in the city. It’s about a 15-20 minute walk from the main square.
- Although you will find bus stops at the train station, the bus station is located at the other end of the city at Autobusova Stanica Nivy.
HIRE A CAR:
- Hire a car and drive to Bratislava. There are many car parks just on the outskirts of the old town because most of Bratislava is pedestrianised.

Where To Stay In Bratislava
We stayed in this boat hotel on the river. It was unique and fun for the kids and I think we only had 2-3 nights there.
